Practical information for mobile students

Getting to Liberec
Liberec is easily accessible from Prague by train and motorway. The distance is approximately 110 km. For students who are not travelling by car, there are two options for getting from Prague to Liberec. Having arrived in Prague (Ruzyne airport) - you need to make your way to the Prague bus station (Cerny Most), proceed as follows:
1. Buy a 26 CZK ticket at the tobacconist in the airport. You can also buy a ticket on the bus from the bus driver - this will cost a little more. If you have any problems buying a ticket ask for help at the airport information office.
2. You need bus No. 500 or No. 119. The bus stop is located in front of the airport building.
3. Once on the bus validate your ticket in the ticket machine. The ticket should be inserted in the direction shown by the arrow. The ticket is now valid and transferable to the Metro. You will probably need to buy two tickets for the metro in case the first one expires.
4. On week days this ticket is valid for 75 minutes any time between 5.00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. Otherwise it is valid for 90 minutes on Saturday or Sunday and during the week before 5.00 a.m. and after 8.00 p.m.
Option 1 - bus No. 500
5. Get off the bus at "Zlicin" (final station) and go to the metro (underground). This is indicated by the "M" sign. The metro has three lines: A, Band C.
6. To reach "Cerny Most" you travel via the B line. It takes about 45 minutes.
Option 2 - bus No. 119
5. Get off the bus at final station "Dejvicka" [De-vitz-ka] (final station) and go to the metro.
6. Take the metro (underground, the A line) to "Mustek" and change to the B line so that you reach the final station "Cerny most".
7. There is a bus station for Liberec at Cerny most. When you leave the train there are stairs to your right. Go down these stairs which will take you below the underground to the bus stops. Find bus stop station 6. This is where your coach leaves for Liberec.
8. You can either buy a ticket at ticket counter "Predprodej jizdenek" or on the bus if there is a remaining free seat. Liberec is pronounced as [Lee-be-retz]. The price of the ticket is about 100 CZK.
Please note:
Your ticket must be valid at all times. If it expires, buy a new one and validate it when entering the paid underground zone in the small orange machine.
Coach tickets can be bought on the bus, however in rush hour you may not be allowed on board because it will be full.
All luggage exceeding 20 x 30 x 60 cm in size has to be stored in the boot of the coach and reported to the driver when getting on the coach. The word for luggage is 'koo-fer'.
The coach trip lasts approx. 60 minutes. Coaches leave every one to three-hours between 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Before travelling consult the departure of your coach on http://timetable.svt.cz/iBus/index.php.
From Liberec’s station you can get to the Technical University of Liberec campus by taking bus number 15 or bus 19. To get to the Residence Halls get off at station Přehrada.  To get to the main university campus in Husova avenue, get off the bus at station Husova.
 – When you arrive in Liberec
The first thing, you will probably do, is to go to the residence assigned to you. Contact your Faculty coordinator and arrange a meeting to discuss your study programme and provide you with all necessary documentation required to obtain a student transport pass, access to student Dinning hall and University library, etc.

About the town
Liberec – the fifth largest town in the Czech Republic with about 100,000 inhabitants – is situated in the north of Bohemia, surrounded by mountains. The Mountain of Ještěd (1012 m above the sea level) is a dominant of the town. On the top of Ještěd, which is accessible by cableway, there is a hotel, a restaurant and a broadcasting tower. From the top of Ještěd there is a beautiful view of Liberec and its surroundings in clear weather.
On the slopes of Ještěd there are ski lifts for downhill skiers and ski jumps where the World Cup competition is held annually.
The Jizera mountains on the other side of the town, with many kilometres of marked trails, are a paradise for cross-country skiers. A lot of them take part in the most popular international race „Jizerská 50“, which has more then 30 year tradition.

Not only the surroundings of the town, but also its centre worth seeing. Liberec can be proud of the oldest ZOO in Bohemia, founded in 1904. The newly reconstructed botanical gardens with a great collection of orchids attract thousands of visitors every year. The Regional Art Gallery, the North-Bohemian Museum, the Town Hall in Vienna style dating from 1893, three theatres with a wide choice of performances, cinemas, discotheques, concert halls, clubs, restaurants with good food and drinks and two swimming- pools are some of other places of interest and entertainment  Liberec can offer.

Bank account
Foreign students have the possibility to open a bank account in the Czech Republic, however  some students chose to use their credit and ATM/debit cards from home. Check with your bank to see what they charge for using your ATM/debit or credit card abroad and to be sure you can use your card in the Czech Republic.

ISIC – International student identity card
We recommend to arrange the card before you arrive to the Czech Republic.
This card will allow you to benefit from student reductions for such things as the public transport pass, most museum and theatre tickets, and many bus, rail and air fares. If for some reason you are not able to do so before coming to Pilsen – for more information visit http://www.isic.cz/.

Working in the Czech Republic
Students that are citizens of the European Union country can work part time, however other students must apply for a work permit.
