Department of Applied Mathematics

Head: doc. RNDr. Miroslav Koucký, CSc.

We teach various subjects in a whole range of bachelor’s and master’s programs at most faculties of the university. A strong emphasis is placed on pairing theoretical education with offering computer-assisted solutions to problems of an applied character. Thanks to the wide range of our faculty members’ research profiles, our department can react effectively to the constantly changing demands of a variety of majors and faculties, appearing as a result of an ever-stronger diversification of study programs, effectively satisfying an unusually varied spectrum of requests about both the form and content of education. Members of the department also act as supervisors and lecturers in doctoral programs both at various faculties of the university and at other institutions.

At present, we are responsible for the master’s program in Applied Mathematics. Graduates of the program, besides learning to think logically and critically, acquire an appropriate range of knowledge in the fields of probability theory and mathematical statistics, discrete mathematics, dependability management and risk analysis, as well as numerical analysis. This theoretical training allows alumni not only to study further in doctoral programs, but also to find employment in institutions dealing with scientific research and development, as well as in a whole range of significant industrial enterprises.

What can you experience at the department?

Students can study abroad in the framework of the Erasmus+ exchange program. Such stays are offered at institutions matching the language skills of our students.

Areas of Research

The theory and application of mathematical statistics, mathematical models of dependability management, applied GIS, the methodology of teaching ICT.
