Educational goals
The follow-up master?s program in Architecture and Urban Planning emphasizes the comprehensive development of students? skills in the fields of architectural design and urban planning. As part of the first year of study, students are therefore required to complete one of the offered studios in urban planning or land-use planning (in the 1st or 2nd semester). The goal is to provide students with the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge required to understand urban and landscape planning processes, and to prepare them to tackle the complex tasks associated with their thesis in the 3rd and 4th semesters, which may also have an urban planning focus. Studio instruction continues in vertical studios. This type represents a specific form of studio instruction based on integrating students from different years of the bachelor?s and master?s programs into a single working unit under the guidance of a joint supervisor (studio director) and a teaching assistant.
Profile of the graduate
A graduate of the master?s degree program in architecture and urban planning is a highly qualified creative professional equipped with comprehensive knowledge and skills enabling independent, conceptual, and creative practice as an architect and urban planner. They possess a deep understanding of the concepts, methods, and theories of contemporary architectural and urban planning practice, including the technological aspects of buildings, urban design, fine arts, the history and theory of architecture, and the preservation of cultural heritage. The study program ensures the development of the graduate?s abilities in the design of buildings, urban complexes, and landscape architecture. The graduate is prepared to independently define and creatively solve complex problems in architectural, urban planning, and landscape architecture practice; they are capable of designing architecture, coordinating design teams, and managing architectural and urban planning projects. The education is designed to be specialized and multidisciplinary, with a balanced mix of technical, humanities, and artistic disciplines, enabling graduates to understand architecture not only as a technical discipline but also as a cultural and social phenomenon. The program includes rigorous studio-based instruction organized vertically, which prepares graduates for the professional demands of practice as well as for potential continuation in doctoral programs. The graduate profile meets the requirements of Directive 2005/36/EC on the recognition of professional qualifications, Act No. 360/1992 Coll., on the practice of the profession of authorized architects, and the standards of the National Qualifications Framework for Tertiary Education. After fulfilling the required professional practice, graduates are eligible to apply for authorization with the Czech Chamber of Architects and to practice independently as architects or urban planners in the Czech Republic and in European Union countries without the need for additional recognition of their qualifications.
